Fireworks and other fun set for Thursday evening Fireworks and other fun set for Thursday evening Both Providence and North Providence have announced plans for fireworks displays on Tuesday as part of next week’s Independence Day festivities. Fireworks will light up the sky above the State House starting at 9:30 p.m., while in North Providence, fireworks are scheduled to begin around 9 p.m. at Governor John A. Notte Park, on Douglas Avenue, north of Mineral Spring Avenue. As in years past, North Providence’s festivities will also feature paddleboat rides in the lake and several hours of food and entertainment at various venues beginning at 5 and 6 p.m. Mike Lyons & the Blue Moon orchestra, which has brought its big band sound to Twin River and the Mohegan Sun Casino, will be performing in the area of the tennis courts at 6 and 9:30 p.m., while over on the park beach, disc jockey Luke Renchan will be providing music for dancing from 6 to 9 p.m. The beach event, which is being jointly sponsored by the North Providence Drug Free Community Coalition and the North Providence Substance Abuse Task Force, is one of this year’s innovations and will include musical games and giveaways. The two groups have also scheduled some youth events from 6 to 9 p.m. at and around the baseball field, including a baseball throw and a golf putting game in which young people will be asked to wear special “fatal vision goggles” as a way of showing how alcohol can impair one’s vision and put oneself and others at risk. Also new this year is a shuttle service to and from the park for town residents with handicaps. Because the number of handicapped parking spaces at the park is limited, the town will have two handicapped-accessible vans — open to town residents only — to shuttle people from the high school’s front parking lot every half-hour, starting at 5 p.m. The office of North Providence Mayor Charles A. Lombardi cautioned that, due to heavy traffic at the end of the fireworks, some of the return shuttle trips may be delayed. The orchestral music and fireworks are being sponsored by the office of Mayor Lombardi and the North Providence Recreation Department. The fireworks display in Providence is being sponsored by the City of Providence and the Providence Tourism Council. Welcome Posted By: LUKE on 6.21.08 Welcome to our new website.
